Black Lives Matter at Summer Camp
Kenesserie Camp affirms that Black Lives Matter.
On November 19th, 2020, Kenesserie Camp joins summer camps across North America in affirming that Black Lives Matter at summer camp. We promise to do our best, and to continue to learn how to, be a part of the work to eliminate structural racism and white supremacy in all spaces at Kenesserie, in our communities and the rest of our lives.
Our mission is to build better kids through camp as a part of God's creation which supports and encourages sharing and growth of faith and friendship within a safe community. In order to foster a safe community, we must work to understand the systemic barriers that Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) face everyday, and actively work to dismantle systems of injustice, racism and white supremacy.
In many ways, it’s important to note that camp itself is political - our industry is born out of a call for change in how youth are provisioned for, treated, and what they are exposed to during their formative years. We believe that summer camps can, and do, improve the lives of our communities and we often engage in advocacy that furthers that call.
At Kenesserie we offer a Registration Assistance Fund to support kids to come to camp, who might otherwise not have the opportunity. We are committed to taking additional steps to fight racism and systems of injustice at camp and in our community through ensuring that we actively work to support BIPOC families using the Registration Assistance Fund. Additionally, we will be reviewing our staff hiring process and policies to ensure we are intentionally creating a welcoming space for BIPOC individuals.
